How I started baking

One fine day, I chanced upon a video from Gemma’s BiggerBolderBaking.com. It was a recipe for a no-bake chocolate tart. It looked delicious and I was craving for some just then. I immediately looked up the recipe and went ahead to gather all the ingredients to make it the very next day.

At that time, I barely had any experience working my way around in a kitchen. But that did not stop me from trying to make Gemma’s No-Bake S’more Pie without the marshmallow topping. It looked simple especially since I was already skipping the marshmallow fluff. Right? Wrong! Somehow I had accidentally added salted butter instead of the unsalted butter that was called for. My cookie crust also did not firm up even after adding what looked to be correct amount of melted butter. My chocolate tart just did not end up as pretty as what was in the picture. It still tasted fantastic though. Maybe just a touch too salty from that salted butter cookie crust.

I started looking up for more recipes to try next and that was the start of my baking adventure. Many recipes I tried initially were catered for the western audience. They occasionally called for ingredients that were not easily available in Singapore. Sure, there was always Phoon Huat which stocks most of these specialised ingredients, but I was not going to visit them so often just to get that corn syrup or treacle which I may only end up using 2 teaspoons of. Hence, I went to attempt some other recipes that called for more commonly found ingredients to try and make a similar end product. But some recipes just didn’t work out well.

Why start mBakinga?

I started mBakinga to share my experiences from trying recipes that I found through the Internet and other sources in the search for the ideal recipe that is worth all that effort put into making it.

I invite you to join me on this adventure and share your experiences as we find that recipe.
